Vista on 512MB?

I just got the new PC returned to me with 3GB of system memory, instead of the 512MB that I have been using (struggling with) for the past 4 months, and I must say that the performance is like night and day. I was afraid that the boot process with 3 GB of RAM would take even longer, but that does not seem to have changed, but the switching between applications is amazingly fast.

Even Chrome is much faster now...

So, I would say that, "Yes, Vista is a memory hog" but memory is cheap so get all that you can on that new PC. And, I would never try and upgrade from an older PC and install Vista, but instead buy the fastest, most powerful machine on the market. Just make sure that what you get everything that you pay for, and don't skimp on the system memory at all...

The Vista Saga continues...

It should have been over a long time ago, but the saga of my experience with Windows Vista continues. It seems that the brand new, high-powered PC that I purchased is only seeing 512 MB of system memory, when I thought that it came with 3GB of onboard system memory. So, I have been complaining about Windows Vista, when it has not been a fair test at all...

I spent the last week exchanging emails with HP, only to find out that the 512 memory module that was actually in memory bank #2 works fine in memory bank #1, but HP will not support me because it was an opened PC and not one in a box that I took home from the store, and that I need to go back to the place of purchase to get it fixed. I guess that I should have lied to HP, but I was too honest for my own good and must now pay the price...

So, after spending the weekend with the PC in the trunk of my car, and getting a run-around from various people at Staples (where it was purchased), including various store managers, I will take it in tomorrow and see what happens next.

All I really want is what I paid for, but that seems to be an impossible mission.

I guess that being honest has its drawbacks...

P.S. Many thanks to all of you for the emails with suggestions of how to handle this. I never would have even thought of all of this without your help...

Downgrade from Vista?

If anybody knows how to downgrade from Windows Vista to XP on a brand new HP Pavillion PC, it would be a huge help to me, so please send me an email.

My only other alternative is to buy a MAC...

Thanks,

Brian

Chrome wish list

After a way to manage bookmarks, it would be really nice to be able to selectively delete stuff from the browser. I tried to manage bookmarks by first going to FireFox, making changes there, and then importing those into Chrome, but it just created a new folder with the changes in it...

And, if you delete the history for the day (week, etc.) it does not delete the most recently viewed images in the nine that appear in the "New Tab" so now I am stuck with nine different images of the weather.com setup that I cannot delete...

I have seen a way to delete recently viewed symbols in Google Finance come and go, so there must be a way to do the same in Chrome. Only make it a permanent feature so it does not drive us all crazy.

Another item is "Print Preview" since the only option seems to be print, but it does not print Flash.

Everybody must get chromed!

You'll like it (with apologies to Robert Allen Zimmerman a.k.a. Bob Dylan).

It's a much. much faster way to browse the web, and it will teach you a lot of things in a very short time. For example, I learned that not everyone knows the difference between a browser and a search engine (and I'm not sure that they really understand, even after all of my explaining).

I did see a lot of head nodding and smiling, but I keep thinking of a deer in the headlights, especially after hearing the words, "Hey - do you want to try a search engine that's a lot faster?"

At least they got the speed part right...
